'Bridesmaids' star Chris O'Dowd is engaged

Tis the season for engagements!

"Bridesmaids" actor Chris O'Dowd -- who wooed Kristen Wiig as lovable Irish cop Nathan Rhodes in the 2011 flick -- will soon tie the knot with his girlfriend, British TV personality Dawn Porter.

Chinese vendors form alliance to battle Apple and other patent predators

Handset makers in China have formed an alliance to prepare for possible patent battles with Apple, Microsoft and Nokia. Coolpad, Konka, TCL, ZTE and Lenovo were among the companies named in a report by?DigiTimes?on Friday. The number of lawsuits filed in China is expected to increase as Microsoft, Nokia and Apple try to increase market share there, the report says.?Nokia has already filed patent infringement suits against several Chinese phone makers and Microsoft has gone after Huawei to try to secure a patent licensing deal.?Huawei responded to Microsoft?s threats?in early November and explained that it has 65,000 patents worldwide. ?We have enough to protect our interests,? Huawei Devices chief marketing officer Victor Xu said. ?We are a very important stakeholder in Android.? Each of the Chinese companies reportedly has a large patent portfolio and, combined, they could create enough of a force to stave off at least some of the patent-related lawsuits that have plagued other companies.

(AP) ? The Supreme Court set up a judicial commission Friday to investigate a secret memo that threatens the Pakistani government, lawyers said, dealing a blow to the country's leaders, who have argued that such a probe is unnecessary.

The government has suggested its opponents on the Supreme Court, in the military and in the political opposition are using the scandal to try to topple the country's leadership.

The political crisis centers on a memo sent to Washington in May, asking for help in stopping a supposed army coup following the American raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

The memo was allegedly crafted by Pakistan's former ambassador to the U.S., Husain Haqqani, with the support of President Asif Ali Zardari. Both Haqqani and Zardari have denied the allegations, but the envoy resigned in the wake of the scandal.

The army, which has denied it ever intended to carry out a coup, was outraged by the memo and supported the Supreme Court's investigation.

The government argued that a court probe was unnecessary because parliament was the more appropriate forum and was already looking into the matter.

"This is the most disappointing judgment," said Haqqani's lawyer, Asma Jehangir, after the Supreme Court ruling. "National security has been given priority over human rights."

There is long-standing tension between Pakistan's military and its civilian leadership because the army has staged a series of coups and ruled the country for much of its 64-year history.

The Supreme Court decided to set up a three-judge commission to investigate the memo scandal in response to a petition filed by a group of opposition politicians, including former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The commission will be led by the chief justice of the Baluchistan high court, Qazi Faez Isa, and must deliver its report within four weeks, said Zafar Ullah, Sharif's lawyer.

"We should have trust and confidence in this commission," said Ishaq Dar, a member of Sharif's political party and another one of the petitioners.

Cyril Almeida, a columnist for Dawn newspaper, said the Supreme Court's decision wasn't a surprise, and unless the commission unearthed something dramatically new, the scandal could just fade away.

The worst case scenario for the government would be evidence linking the president to the memo, Almeida told The Associated Press. But even then, Zardari would enjoy immunity from criminal prosecution while in office, and impeaching the president would be difficult given the large number of seats his party has in parliament, he said.

"It doesn't look right now like the commission will be used to undermine the government to the point of where it has to go," said Almeida.

The political crisis comes at a time when Pakistan is facing a violent Taliban insurgency, a stuttering economy and troubled relations with its most important ally, the United States.

A bomb exploded outside a market in a Taliban stronghold in northwestern Pakistan on Friday, killing two people, said Tariq Khan, a local government administrator.

The apparent target of the attack in the Bajur tribal area was a member of an anti-Taliban militia. He was killed, as well as a passer-by, said Khan.

Apple saw record sales this holiday season, 12 times the amount of activations on Christmas Day

December 27, 2011 at 12:11 pm

Apple saw record-setting sales this holiday season,?according?to?Localytics. So well, that 12.5 times more iOS devices were activated over Christmas than past weekends. For comparison sake: there were?21 times more iPods compared to 14 times more iPhones. The iPods were most likely gifted to younger children who do not yet have a cell phone. At any rate? there were many people enjoying iOS devices on Christmas Day.

Apple is said to have another record setting quarter after a very?successful?fiscal Q4 for the company.?The last earnings report?said?Apple claimed $28.27 billion in revenue and saw record-setting Mac and iPhone sales. The holiday quarter is expected to be even better.

Apple is set to have its best year ever in its App Store with approximately 10 billion downloads in 2011, along with a record-setting holiday season.?That estimate doubles collective downloads from the three years prior, according to research firm Flurry.?The report noted the Android Market hit 10 billion cumulative downloads in December, up from 3 billion total downloads in May 2011.

Flurry also backs up Localytics claim and said Christmas Day 2011s activations crushed Christmas Day 2010s by almost 2.5 times. This year, 6.8 million iOS devices were activated, while last year?saw 2.8 million device activations?a 140 percent growth. We are looking forward to hearing what Apple has to say in late January.

In comparison to Android?

Apple saw similar sales. Interestingly, the sales for both platforms differentiate between region? as seen in the graph below:

Doh! Top Science Journal Retractions of 2011

News | More Science

Each year hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific articles are retracted. Most involve no blatant malfeasance; the authors themselves often detect errors and retract the paper. Some retractions, however, entail plagiarism, false authorship or cooked data

Image: City of Yuma, Arizona

Bad science papers can have lasting effects. Consider the 1998 paper in the journal The Lancet that linked autism to the MMR vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella. That paper was fully retracted in 2010 upon evidence that senior author Andrew Wakefield had manipulated data and breached several proper ethical codes of conduct.

Nevertheless the erroneous paper continues to undermine public confidence in vaccines. After the Lancet article, MMR vaccination rates dipped sharply and haven't fully rebounded. This decline in the MMR vaccine has been tied to a rise in measles cases resulting in permanent injury and death.

Each year hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific articles are retracted. Most involve no blatant malfeasance; the authors themselves often detect errors and retract the paper. Some retractions, however, as documented on the blog Retraction Watch, entail plagiarism, false authorship or cooked data.

No journal is safe from retractions, from the mighty "single-word-title" journals such as Nature, Science and Cell, to the myriad minor, esoteric ones.

Yet as astronomer Carl Sagan once said, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." Below are five science results retracted in 2011, pulled permanently off the books in part for falling far short of meeting the Sagan standard.

#5: Los Angeles marijuana dispensaries lead to drop in crime.

Keep smoking. The RAND Corporation retracted its own report in October after realizing its sloppy data collection.

Crime data compiled from neighborhoods with these highly contentious medical marijuana dispensaries supposedly revealed slightly lower crime rates. The authors attributed this decline not to marijuana itself but rather the presence of security cameras and guards in and around the dispensaries, having a positive effect on the neighborhood. [The History of 8 Hallucinogens]

The L.A. city attorney's office was incensed with the report, having argued the opposite ? that the dispensaries breed crime. The city's lawyers soon found critical flaws in RAND's data collection, largely stemming from RAND's reliance on data from CrimeReports.com, which did not include data from the L.A. Police Department. RAND blamed itself for the error, not CrimeReports.com, which had made no claims of having a complete set of data, and, in fact, didn't even know about the study.

#4 -- Butterfly meets worm, falls in love, and has caterpillars.

The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) published a fantastic claim in 2009 by zoologist Donald Williamson, which was delightfully reported in the science news media. Williamson claimed that ancestors of modern butterflies mistakenly fertilized their eggs with sperm from velvet worms. The result was the necessity for the caterpillar stage of the butterfly life cycle.

The PNAS paper got a few laughs among evolutionary scientists, but it hasn't yet been retracted. Williamson's follow-up 2011 paper in the journal Symbiosis, however, has been retracted.

Researchers Michael Hart and Richard Grosberg at the University of Texas, Austin, systematically refuted all of Williamson's claims in the pages of PNAS by the end of 2009. They based their arguments entirely on well-known concepts of both basic evolution and the genetics of modern worms and butterflies. When Symbiosis published its butterfly-meets-worm article in January 2011, Hart raised questions with the editor. As of November the paper is no longer available.

Infographic: Our Military?s Dangerous Course

The U.S. military is on a dangerous course. Under the projected defense spending caps brought on by the Budget Control Act of 2011,?funding for modernizing the military will be squeezed to a dangerous degree. That includes reduced spending on the procurement of new weapons and equipment and research and development on new defense technologies as the infographic below shows. (Article continued below.)

In a new paper, Heritage?s?Baker Spring, the?F. M. Kirby Research Fellow in National Security Policy, explains the impact the reduced funding will have on America?s defenses:

The result will be a military that lacks the modern weapons and equipment it needs, loses its technological edge over future enemies, and finds itself dependent on a seriously eroded defense industrial base.

As a result of the twin pressures of the estimated spending caps on the core defense program derived from the Budget Control Act . . . and the rising cost of military compensation, the level of funding for military modernization will necessarily fall to unacceptably low levels. Under this scenario, funding for defense modernization within the core defense program . . . ?could fall to roughly $145 billion in current dollars in FY 2016.

How does that compare to where the military would have otherwise been? Spring says that under?President Obama?s original budget request for FY 2012,?$188.4 billion was to be allocated to these accounts ? meaning that?modernization funding will decline by?$43 billion,?or 23 percent, over the four-year period. If you control for inflation, that?s a?29 percent decline.

Spring says that?s an unacceptable course and he recommends that Congress 1)?Prevent application of the national security and discretionary spending caps under the Budget Control Act to the DOD budget; and 2)?Restructure the military health care and retirement systems to free money inside the DOD budget for application to the modernization account.

India, Japan likely to resume formal nuclear talks

India and Japan are expected to resume the stalled dialogue on the possible nuclear cooperation agreement between the two countries when Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda visits India on Tuesday.

Senior official of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Gautam Bhambawale, said: "There have been informal discussions and this is a subject which will be discussed when Indian and Japanese Prime Ministers meet."

India and Japan have already concluded three rounds of talks on nuclear cooperation. The discussions between the two sides were stalled earlier this year in the wake of Fukushima tragedy in April this year.

Ever since the Fukushima tragedy, Japan has been looking inwards to address the issues raised by the catastrophe and New Delhi is hopeful that Japan will resume the stalled dialogue when Prime Minister Noda visits India.

Japan has remained a firm advocate of Non Proliferation and it was a paradigm shift in the country's approach for even commencing dialogue on nuclear cooperation with India last year.

India is non-signatory of the Non Proliferation treaty and has not even inked comprehensive test ban treaty.

Japan is the only country, which had witnessed nuclear attacks, and it is really difficult for Tokyo to mould the pubic opinion in favour of signing nuclear cooperation agreement with India.

Japan is a key supplier of equipments to French and US nuclear energy companies like the Areva and General Electronics.

During the Japanese Prime Minister's visit to India, both sides are also looking forward to scale up economic partnership. The talks on Delhi-Mumbai freight corridor is expected to advance during the discussions, proposal of supplying bullet trains to Indian railways is also on the cards.

The two sides are also expected to ink a swap deal in currency.

Tokyo is the biggest donor of ODA i.e. overseas development assistance.

India and Japan will also discuss maritime cooperation, piracy and counter terrorism.

The Japanese Prime Minister will be in India on Tuesday and Wednesday. This will be his first visit to India.oda has, however, met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of United Nations General Assembly in September this year. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)

Residents, pets escape burning home

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Three residents, two dogs and a cat survived a fire Tuesday morning on the west side of Indianapolis.

Fire crews were sent to the home in the 500 block of North Tibbs Avenue just before 5 a.m. When they arrived, fire and smoke was coming from the second story of the home.

Residents awoke to smoke detectors going off and one resident saw fire in the bathroom before safely evacuating. They told firefighters they had been having electrical issues and turned off power at the breaker before going to bed.

The home was badly damaged by fire. Battalion Chief Dave Grider estimates the home had $60,000 in damages. The residents were renting the home and will stay with friends.

Firefighters had the fire under control in 20 minutes and say an electric issue in the attic started the blaze. A Shitzu dog named Octuro, a Poodle named Ruben and a cat escaped with the home?s residents.

Louis Vuitton sues over knockoff bag in "Hangover 2" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? It might be more expensive, but sometimes it really pays to buy name-brand.

French luxury brand Louis Vuitton has filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. over the use of a Louis Vuitton knockoff bag in "The Hangover: Part II."

According to the suit, filed in U.S. District Court in New York on Thursday, an airport scene in the film makes use of a counterfeit bag made by a company named Diophy, which is currently being sued by Louis Vuitton for trademark infringement.

During the scene, Zach Galifianakis' character, Alan, warns the character Stu (played by Ed Helms), "Careful, that is ... that is a Louis Vuitton." The French company objects to both the movies use of its trademark, and the characterization of the bag as a real Louis Vuitton. According to the suit, Warner Bros. is "explicitly misleading the public about the source of the Diophy Bag" and undermining the company's enforcement efforts against counterfeits of its product.

According to the suit, Louis Vuitton objected to Warner's after the film's opening, but the company still released the film on DVD with the offending footage included.

Citing a previous lawsuit over the film -- during which Warner's said it was considering altering a scene that featured a tattoo that might have violated a copyright -- Louis Vuitton argues that altering the airport scene to eliminate the company's trademarked design would have been an easy fix.

In the suit, the French company is asking that the court permanently enjoin Warner's from using its marks in any way, and order the company to surrender all copies of the film containing the marks. It is also asking for triple damages on all profits that Warner Bros. may have amassed from using Vuitton's marks, plus attorneys' fees and court costs.

This is far from the only lawsuit that "The Hangover Part II" -- a huge hit that has amassed a worldwide take of more than $500 million -- has sparked. In addition to the tattoo lawsuit, which was settled in June, the company was sued in October by an aspiring actor who claims that the plot was stolen from his life experiences.

Warner Bros. had no comment for TheWrap on the lawsuit.

Fuqua School of BusinessImage via WikipediaImpact Investing - YouTube: Impact Investing

Duke' Fuqua School of Business just posted this fascinating talk by
It's sort of long, but very interesting talk on Impact Investing!

What is impact investing? I would define it as sort of the marriage between traditional finance and social entrepreneurship that concludes profit based organizations can and do much good.

(Oh and he is right, it sounds better to say "I am a social entrepreneur" than than "I run a charity").

From Wikipedia:

"Impact investing refers to investments made based on the practice of assessing not only the financial return on investment, but also the social and environmental impacts of the investment that happen in the course of the operations of the business and the consumption of the product or service which the business creates. An impact investor seeks to enhance social structure or environmental health as well as achieve financial returns."

What to Watch For - Presented by EA Sports

The Cleveland Browns play their final road game of the 2011 regular season on Saturday when they travel to Baltimore?s M&T Bank Stadium for an AFC North Division battle with the Ravens.

Baltimore is tied atop the division with Pittsburgh, but owns the tiebreaker after winning both matchups against the Steelers this season. The Ravens got their emotional and physical leader back on defense last Sunday in the person of middle linebacker Ray Lewis, but fell 34-14 at the San Diego Chargers.

The Browns are 7-18-0 all-time against the Ravens and have a 3-9-0 record in road games. The Ravens have won seven straight games in the series and three consecutive contests in Baltimore.

In the first meeting of this season, the Ravens earned a 24-10 win over the Browns in Cleveland. Baltimore running back Ray Rice ran for a career-high 204 yards and one touchdown on 29 carries and paced a ground game that gained 290 yards against the Browns.

Quarterback Joe Flacco completed just 10 of 23 attempts for 158 yards, but did not turn the ball over and was sacked just once in the win.

Baltimore?s special teams unit contributed in a major way, as Lardarius Webb returned one of Brad Maynard?s punts 68 yards for a touchdown.

As the game unfolds, here are several things to keep an eye on:

--Defensive linemen Jabaal Sheard, Phil Taylor and Ahtyba Rubin.

Sheard registered the first multi-sack game of his career last Sunday with two against the Arizona Cardinals. His 7.5 sacks are tied for first in the NFL among all rookies. Tampa Bay?s Adrian Clayborn has also registered 7.5 sacks this season.

With his first sack of John Skelton last Sunday, Sheard passed Browns Legend Michael Dean Perry for second on the franchise?s rookie sack list. Former Browns and current Oakland Raiders linebacker Kamerion Wimbley set the record with 11 sacks in the 2006 season.

Sheard, who needs 2.5 sacks to be the ninth Browns player to register double-digit sacks in a single season, is tied for third in the league with five forced fumbles. Only Detroit?s Cliff Avril and Baltimore?s Terrell Suggs have more forced fumbles (six) on the year.

While Sheard is tied for third in sacks among NFL rookies, Taylor?s 4.0 sacks rank eighth in the same category. Taylor needs one sack to tie Chip Banks (1982) for the fourth-most sacks by a Browns rookie.

Rubin registered four total tackles against the Cardinals and his 67 stops rank second among all NFL defensive linemen. Only New York?s Jason Pierre-Paul has registered more tackles (76) than Rubin. Rubin ranks first among all interior defensive linemen in tackles.

--Linebacker D?Qwell Jackson. Jackson registered 13 tackles, including 12 solo stops, against the Cardinals last Sunday.

Jackson leads the team with 138 total tackles, while also having 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries, three pass breakups and an interception. He has registered at least 10 tackles in seven of the Browns? 14 games this season, including the last three. Jackson totaled 13 stops in back-to-back games at Pittsburgh (Dec. 8) and at Arizona (Dec. 18), registered 12 against Baltimore (Dec. 4), 11 each against Cincinnati (Sept. 11) and Miami (Sept. 25) and 10 against Tennessee (Oct. 2) and at San Francisco (Oct. 30).

Jackson?s 138 tackles rank second in the league through 14 games. Washington Redskins linebacker and Cleveland native London Fletcher (146) is the only defenders to make more tackles than Jackson this season.

--Wide receiver Greg Little. Little?s 57 receptions rank second among all NFL rookies, trailing only Cincinnati?s A.J. Green. Little has gained 669 yards and caught two touchdowns through the first 14 games of his career. Little currently ranks second in Browns history for catches by a rookie.

He is nine catches away from Kevin Johnson?s record of 66 receptions in the 1999 season. Little is 160 receiving yards away from passing Derrick Alexander for the third-highest total by a Browns rookie. Alexander gained 828 yards in 1994.

--Phil Dawson. The franchise leader with 273 career field goals made, Dawson is second all-time on the team?s scoring list with 1,144 points.

Dawson has kicked a single-season personal best seven field goals of 50 or more yards. His seven field goals of 50 or more yards lead the NFL and are one away from the league record for the most 50-yarders in a season. In 1995, Morten Anderson, then with Atlanta, and in 2008, Detroit?s Jason Hansen both kicked eight field goals of 50 or more yards.

--Defensive back Joe Haden. Haden has 17 pass breakups on the season and is tied with Jabari Greer of the New Orleans Saints for fourth in the league in that category. He trails only Seattle?s Brandon Browner (20 passes defended), Kansas City?s Brandon Flowers and Green Bay?s Tramon Williams (19 each).

Haden is tied for third -- trailing only Williams and Kansas City?s Brandon Carr -- with 35 pass breakups since the start of the 2010 season.

--Wide receiver Joshua Cribbs. The two-time Pro Bowl kick returner currently stands seventh all-time with 10,292 career return yards and most recently passed Kevin Williams (9,604) earlier this season.

He ranks seventh in kickoff return yards (8,701), fifth in return touchdowns (10) and first in kickoff return touchdowns (eight).

After not having a return of 40 yards or longer in 2010, Cribbs already has four this season. All four of Cribbs? returns of over 40 yards have led to Browns scores. His 51-yard kickoff return against Cincinnati, as well as his 52-yard kickoff and 43-yard punt return in Indianapolis led to touchdowns. Cribbs? 63-yard kickoff return in Houston led to a field goal.

Cribbs has a history with the Ravens, having taken back a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown on November 2, 2008. He has twice returned seven kickoffs in a game against the Ravens and registered 306 combined return yards in a 33-30 overtime victory in Baltimore on November 18, 2007.

--Defensive back Sheldon Brown and four-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman Joe Thomas. Brown has played in 158 consecutive regular season games, which stands sixth among all active defensive players. Thomas has started and not missed a snap in all of his 78 career games with the Browns.

Brown has collected 22 career interceptions and has at least one takeaway in each of his ten NFL seasons. Brown is tied with Baltimore?s Ed Reed with the fourth-longest active streak of consecutive seasons with an interception. Green Bay?s Charles Woodson (14 seasons), Denver?s Champ Bailey (13), Nate Clements of San Francisco (11) and Deon Grant of the New York Giants (11) rank ahead of Brown and Reed.

--Punter Brad Maynard. Of the 69 punts Maynard has kicked this season, 27 have landed inside the 20-yard line. With one more, he would equal Dave Zastudil (28 in 2006) and Brian Hansen (28 in 1992) for third-most in team history. He is five away from tying Bryan Wagner?s record of 32 from the 1989 season.

--Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs. Suggs leads the Ravens with 13 sacks this season and in addition to the hits on the quarterback, he has registered 60 total tackles, including 43 solo stops. He has had three three-sack games this year. Suggs is three sacks away from breaking Peter Boulware?s single-season mark of 15 from 2001.

With one more forced fumble, Suggs would break his single-season record of six, which he set in 2003 and equaled in both 2005 and 2011.

In his career, Suggs has registered 88 total tackles, returned one interception 42 yards for a touchdown and 13 sacks for 88.5 lost yards against the Browns.

--Joe Flacco. Flacco is one 300-yard passing game away from breaking a first-place between himself and Vinny Testaverde for the franchise record of eight. He could also set Baltimore?s franchise record of five 300-yard passing games in one season.

He has completed 286 of 499 attempts for 3,348 yards and 17 touchdowns against 11 interceptions this year. Flacco carries an 80.0 quarterback rating into Saturday?s game and will throw against a highly-ranked Browns pass defense.

The Browns have allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete 231 of 405 attempts for 2,805 yards and 14 touchdowns against eight interceptions. Cleveland has registered 29 sacks for 167 lost yards this season.

--Ray Rice. He has gained 1,086 yards and scored 10 touchdowns on 244 carries and serves as a dual threat. Rice leads the Ravens with 71 receptions and has accounted for 648 yards and two touchdowns in the passing game.

Rice needs 114 yards to become the fourth player since 1970 to record three consecutive seasons with at least 1,200 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards. Priest Holmes and Hall of Famers Marshall Faulk and Thurman Thomas are the only other players to reach that mark.

The Browns?enter Saturday?s game at 4-10 following the team?s 20-17 overtime loss to the Cardinals in Glendale last week. The Ravens are 10-4 and in a first place tie in the AFC North Division after their 34-14 loss at the Chargers last Sunday.

CONNECTIONS

Browns offensive linemen Tony Pashos and Oniel Cousins were drafted by the Ravens and began their professional careers with the organization. Pashos was a fifth round pick (No. 173 overall) in 2003 and made 23 starts with 38 appearances for Baltimore. He also made one postseason start.

Cousins was a third round choice (No. 99 overall) in 2008. He made four starts and appeared in 25 games with the Ravens.

Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome was selected by the Browns with the No. 23 overall pick in the 1978 NFL Draft and became a Hall of Fame inductee after playing with the team from 1978-90. Newsome still holds seven franchise records (most catches in a career, season and game, most consecutive games with a catch, yards in a career and game and most seasons with 50 or more receptions).

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh (Perrysburg/Miami of Ohio), assistant special teams coach Marwan Maalouf (Strongsville/Baldwin-Wallace College) and linebackers coach Dean Pees (Dunkirk/Bowling Green State University) are Ohio natives.

Baltimore?s assistant head coach/special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg coached the Browns? special teams from 2001-06 and his special teams units ranked in the top ten in several categories during that time.

Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano was the Browns? defensive backs coach from 2001-04. Under his direction, the Browns defensive backs registered 28 of the team?s NFL-best 33 interceptions in 2001.

Defensive line coach Clarence Brooks served in the same capacity with the Browns in 1999.

Maalouf worked with film breakdown and the Browns? special teams from 2004-06.

Pees was Cribbs? head coach at Kent State University and guided him to 13 school records. Under Pees? direction, Cribbs was only the second player in NCAA history to rush for and also throw for 1,000 or more yards in a single season.

Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff played five games with the Browns in 2009. He connected on four extra points and went six of six on field goal tries.

Baltimore wide receiver Lee Evans (Warrensville Heights/Bedford High School), defensive back Brandon McKinney (Dayton/Chaminade-Julienne) and safety Haruki Nakamura (Elyria/Lakewood St. Edward) are Ohio natives. Nakamura played collegiately at the University of Cincinnati.
