Williams-Sonoma Serves Up Seasonal Treats, Cooking Demos and ...

For many of our friends, when we mention Williams-Sonoma?they?instantly conjure up images of cookware, cutlery, bakeware and electronics. ?Unfortunately, the last time we baked (or even cooked, sigh) seems like it was in the ?90s. ?Therefore, a blog post seemed like an odd choice? or was it??While Williams-Sonoma has a lock on top quality products to fill the dream kitchen, ?its their easy-to-make mixes, decadent sweets and quick demos that keep us coming back for more. ?Add in some guests chefs from our favorite sweet spots ? and its a match made in heaven!

Every November, Williams-Sonoma?s?Center City store in The Bellevue (Broad and Walnut Streets) debuts a new line of seasonally inspired goodies complimented by a ?series of cooking technique demos. Every year, the store fills with classic and trending seasonally-inspired flavors such as pumpkin, peppermint, chocolate, eggnog and more. They take classic recipes that remind us of our childhood and put their own unique spin on them. One of our favorite examples of this was their famous peppermint bark. If you go back ?several years, you would find us tasting our very first bark at the Philadelphia-based location. Fast forward to modern times, and they?ve taken this perfect flavor duo to new height with?their new?Peppermint Crunch Cake. ?We spy another?example?this with the flavor of old-fashioned Snickerdoodles. They?ve taken an understated dessert and made it into a superstar with delicious make-at-home bread mix and a Snickerdoodle frosting. ?(And yes, for the record? it is possible that the frosting was eaten before we even fired up the oven. Eh hem, in ALL honesty, the jar of frosting MIGHT not have even survived the trip on the way home?.) (Blush)

This year, as a compliment to their sweet offerings, Williams-Sonoma tries to ensure that we have an equally delicious?holiday dinner to pair with our favorite course. They offer simple to follow, free cooking demonstrations that are a?road map?to the perfect holiday feast. ?Philly Loves Fun had the pleasure of previewing one of these demos with our readers and media friends. King of the kitchen Jeff Acker walked us through a step-by-step process to making several dishes using?ingredients?found in the store. ?Jeff even introduced us to the mixologists at Restaurant XIX at the Hyatt Bellevue. Together, they armed us with recipes, tips and secrets that would make even our mamma proud.

As we enjoyed Jeff?s wonderful humor and delicious food samples, we spied 2012?s superstar lineup. New (and returning products) that made our ?must have list? include Holiday Tree Whoopie Pies,?Alfajores,?Eggnog Pancake & Waffle Mix,?Pecan Pie In-a-Jar?and?Gingerbread Spice Quick Bread Mix.

Outside of quality products that meet our seal of approval, and the great demos, Williams-Sonoma brings in guest chefs and bakers to further whet our?appetite.

Afternoon Snack: Mini Homemade Pop Tarts: Vitamin G: Health ...

When I was in elementary school, I was addicted to Pop-Tarts to the point that I found it completely necessary to make weekly trips to the supermarket in case a new flavor had come out. So, when I found a recipe in the Tiny Food Party cookbook to make my own at home, I squealed. Really.

tinyfood_interior_poptarts-cropped.jpg
But just look at them! You probably would've had a lil squee, too. They're surprisingly not complicated to make since the dough can be bought rather than made from scratch. And the filling is made with real fruit, so you don't need to worry about any mystery ingredients!

One batch yields 24 of these goodies: perfectly portioned out for a delightful little afternoon treat to satisfy your craving. Another idea: Sayonara, birthday cupcakes--these are way cooler.

Recipe for Mini Homemade Pop Tarts
makes 24 (12 of each flavor)

You'll need:

Pie dough
homemade or store bought, chilled

Fruit filling
1 cup hulled and chopped strawberries
1/2 cup blueberries
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons honey
S?mores filling
3/4 cup Nutella
3/4 cup marshmallow creme

Egg wash
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/4 cup heavy cream, plus more for brushing pastries

Royal icing
1 egg white
11/4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Sprinkles, for decorating

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375?F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. Combine fruit filling ingredients and 3 tablespoons water in a medium pot over medium heat; stir. Gently mash berries with the back of a wooden spoon and simmer, stirring frequently, for 30 to 40 minutes, or until filling has thickened. Let cool.

3. Cut chilled dough into 4 equal pieces. Roll 2 pieces into equal rectangles about 3-by-8 inches. Fill a piping bag with Nutella and a second piping bag with marshmallow creme. Onto one of the rectangles, pipe rows of Nutella 1/2 inch apart. Pipe rows of marshmallow creme on top.

4. To make the egg wash, whisk together egg and heavy cream. Using a pastry brush, carefully brush egg wash onto dough between the rows of filling. Gently lay the second dough rectangle over top and press around each mound of filling. {Tip: This is the same method used for homemade ravioli.} Cut 1-by-11/2-inch rectangles with a pizza cutter (you should have 12 tarts) and press the back of a fork along the edges to seal. Place tarts on one of the prepared sheets and brush lightly with cream. Cut 3 tiny slits in the top of each tart. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Place on wire racks to cool completely. Repeat the process with the remaining two slabs of dough and the cooled fruit filling to make 12 fruit-filled tarts.

5. For the icing, in a medium mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, beat egg white on medium-high speed for 2 minutes, or until light and frothy. Add powdered sugar, 1/4 cup at a time, until mixture is thick and smooth. Add vanilla and beat for 1 minute more. Spread icing onto pastries with an offset spatula or your fingers. Top with sprinkles.

Are you excited to try these out? What flavors would you use?

Pregnancy tests may detect men's cancer | WTVR.com ? Richmond ...

pregnancy

By Ashley Hayes,CNN

(CNN) ? If you?ve been near social media or on the Internet, you may be aware of the buzz over posts claiming a teenage boy took a home pregnancy test as a joke, received a positive result, and wound up being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

CNN interviewed a girl who identified herself as a friend of the 17-year-old, but was not able to independently confirm the posts.

However, it?s true home pregnancy tests can detect some types of testicular cancer in men, experts say ? but the tests would not be useful as a screening tool.

According to the American Cancer Society, pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone called Beta-HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). Beta-HCG is produced by the cells of a woman?s placenta during pregnancy, but is also excreted by some tumors ?including some, but not all, testicular cancers,? the cancer society says.

?At the time of diagnosis, only a small minority of men with testicular cancer have HCG levels high enough to be detected by a home urine pregnancy test,? says Dr. Ted Gansler, director of medical content for the American Cancer Society, in a statement. ?More sensitive blood tests for HCG with a lower cutoff level could detect a somewhat higher percentage, but several non-cancerous conditions can cause false positive results.

?Current evidence does not indicate that screening the general population of men with a urine test for HCG (or with urine or blood tests for any other tumor marker) can find testicular cancer early enough to reduce testicular cancer death rates,? Gansler says.

Gansler told CNN in an e-mail that ?much less often, some other cancers might cause a positive pregnancy test.? Medical journals have documented that both men and women patients with pancreas, lung, stomach or other cancers may have HCG levels high enough to cause a positive pregnancy test result, he says.

A lump on the testicle is the first sign of cancer, according to the cancer society, and men should see a doctor right away if one is found.

But even regular self-exams aren?t recommended by the ACS because they have not been studied enough to show they reduce the death rate from testicular cancer. ?Without that evidence, the American Cancer Society cannot make a recommendation on regular testicular self-exams for all men. But we do think men should decide for themselves whether or not to do regular exams.?

CNN?s John Bonifield, Elizabeth Cohen and Miriam Falco contributed to this report.

Obama wins second term, Romney concedes defeat

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama had little time to savor victory on Wednesday after voters gave him a second term in the White House where he faces urgent economic challenges, a looming fiscal showdown and a still-divided Congress able to block his every move.

Despite a decisive win over Republican Mitt Romney in Tuesday's election, Obama must negotiate with a Republican majority in the House of Representatives to try to overcome the partisan gridlock that gripped Washington for much of his first term.

The Democratic president's most immediate concern is the "fiscal cliff" of scheduled tax increases and spending cuts that could crush the U.S. economic recovery if it kicks in at the end of the year.

The prospect of Obama and Congress struggling to agree on the issue weighed heavily on global financial markets on Wednesday and helped send Wall Street stocks into a post-election swoon.

Obama also faces challenges abroad including the West's nuclear standoff with Iran, the civil war in Syria, the winding down of the war in Afghanistan and dealing with an increasingly assertive China.

At home, Obama's triumph could embolden him in his dealings with the Republicans, who were in disarray after failing to unseat him or reclaim control of the U.S. Senate, an outcome many conservatives had predicted. The party is now headed for a period of painful soul-searching.

Voters gave Obama a second chance despite stubbornly high unemployment and a weak economic recovery, but they preserved the status quo of divided government in Washington.

Obama's fellow Democrats retained control of the Senate and Republicans kept their majority in the House, giving them power to curb the president's legislative ambitions on everything from taxes to immigration reform.

This is the political reality facing Obama - who won a far narrower victory over Romney than his historic 2008 victory over John McCain when he became the country's first black president.

He returns to Washington later on Wednesday after basking in the glow of his re-election together with thousands of elated supporters at a victory rally in his hometown of Chicago in the early hours of the morning.

"We can seize this future together because we are not as divided as our politics suggests," Obama told the gathering.

Romney, a multimillionaire former private equity executive, came back from a series of campaign stumbles to fight a close battle after besting Obama in the first of three presidential debates.

But the former Massachusetts governor failed to convince voters of his argument that his business experience made him the best candidate to repair a weak U.S. economy.

CALL TO CONGRESS LEADERS

Trying to make good on his promise to seek compromise, Obama followed up in telephone calls with congressional leaders, including the two top Republican lawmakers, John Boehner and Mitch McConnell, to express his determination to work together.

"The president reiterated his commitment to finding bipartisan solutions to: reduce our deficit in a balanced way, cut taxes for middle-class families and small businesses and create jobs," a White House official said.

The problems that dogged Obama in his first term , which cast a long shadow over his 2008 campaign message of hope and change, still confront him. He must tackle the $1 trillion annual deficits, rein in the $16 trillion national debt and overhaul expensive social programs.

The most urgent focus for Obama and U.S. lawmakers will be to deal with the "fiscal cliff," a mix of tax increases and spending cuts due to extract some $600 billion from the economy at the end of the year, barring a deal with Congress. Economists warn it could push the United States back into recession.

House Majority Leader Boehner moved swiftly on the issue, citing "the need for both parties to find common ground and take steps together to help our economy grow and create jobs, which is critical to solving our debt.

Post-election concern about U.S. fiscal problems contributed to a fall in global financial markets as jittery investors scrambled for less-risky assets.

All three major U.S. stock indexes were down more than 2 percent by late afternoon, with the Dow Jones industrial average losing nearly 300 points and the S&P 500 on track for its biggest drop since June. Eurozone debt worries were also a factor in the market decline.

Boehner has made it clear he intends to stand firm against any income tax increases on wealthier Americans, which Obama has demanded.

Senate Republican leader McConnell gave no sign he was willing to concede his conservative principles.

"The voters have not endorsed the failures or excesses of the president's first term, they have simply given him more time to finish the job they asked him to do together with a Congress that restored balance to Washington after two years of one-party control," McConnell said.

COMFORTABLE WIN IN ELECTORAL COLLEGE

The nationwide popular vote in Tuesday's election was extremely close with Obama taking about 50 percent to 49 percent for Romney after a campaign in which the candidates and their party allies spent a combined $2 billion. But in the state-by-state system of electoral votes that decides the White House, Obama notched up a comfortable victory.

By early on Wednesday, he had 303 electoral votes, well over the 270 needed to win, to Romney's 206. Florida's close race was not yet declared, leaving its 29 electoral votes still to be claimed.

The Republican Party, after losing the past two presidential contests, is expected to analyze at length what went wrong and how to fix it, especially how it has alienated Hispanic voters who were an important constituency in Obama's victory.

Some critics have argued that the Republican party, with its conservative Tea Party faction, have moved too far from the American mainstream to attract enough independent voters to reclaim the White House.

"The fact is, Republicans are going to have to do a lot of rethinking at the presidential level," Newt Gingrich, a former House speaker who lost the Republican nominating race to Romney, told CBS's "This Morning" program.

Obama's win put to rest the prospect of wholesale repeal of his 2010 healthcare reform law.

Obama, who took office in 2009 as the ravages of the financial crisis were hitting the U.S. economy, must continue his efforts to ignite strong growth and recover from the worst downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s. An uneven recovery has been showing some signs of strength but the country's jobless rate, at 7.9 percent, remains stubbornly high.

Obama may now reshuffle his cabinet. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton plan to step down soon.

Democrats widened their control of the 100-member Senate by two. The Republican majority in the 435-member House means that Congress still faces a deep partisan divide.

"That means the same dynamic. That means the same people who couldn't figure out how to cut deals for the past three years," said Ethan Siegel, an analyst who tracks Washington politics for institutional investors.

International leaders offered Obama their congratulations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has had a testy relationship with the U.S. leader, vowed to work with him "to ensure the interests that are vital for the security of Israel's citizens.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said Britain and the United States should make finding a way to solve the Syrian crisis a priority following Obama's re-election.

In the Middle East, where the Obama administration took a cautious approach while the Arab Spring shook the region, Obama's win prompted more of a sense of relief than happiness. A tweet from one of Saudi Arabia's most influential clerics summed up the Middle East's response. "Obama isn't good," tweeted Salman al-Oudah, "But he is the lesser evil."

4 Lessons Learned from the 2012 Presidential Election | World of ...

4 Lessons Learned from the 2012 Presidential ElectionThere is a lot to be learned from history.

And with the 2012 U.S. Presidential elections now in our past, I believe the campaigns have taught us a few new things that hopefully the new President and Congress can take to heart.

1. The American people don?t want finger-pointing and blame ? they want bi-partisanship.

Nobody likes a government that is so polarized that it can?t agree on anything. Even during the Reagan (with Democrats having a majority in Congress during some of that time) and Clinton years (with Republicans having a majority in Congress during some of that time) things got done.

A Congress that can?t get things done demonstrates a significant lack of leadership and a spirit of good government among both parties in Congress. The people have spoken ? they want that leadership and compromise moving forward.

Which is bad news for ?ber-lobbyists like Grover Norquist, who arm-twisted Republicans to sign a pledge never to raise taxes ? perhaps a good idea in an ideal world. But we don?t live in some ideal world.

2. Don?t repeatedly tell bald-faced lies on the campaign trail.

While both Presidential candidates were guilty of this, Romney?s lies demonstrated a new lack of subtlety and a seeming lack of moral fiber and character.

Whether it was his magical plan to reduce the deficit (with few details), his back-pedaling on universal healthcare (fine for Massachusetts when he was governor, but suddenly not fine when his opponent passed it on a national level), his false claims about bipartisanship while leading Massachusetts (not really true), or his assertion that Jeep was going to move all of its manufacturing to China (something he never even acknowledged was wrong, even when Jeep parent Chrysler told him it was a lie), Romney just couldn?t seem to keep from telling whoppers time and time again.

The American people are not stupid. Lie to us so often and about so many different things, and they catch on ? Romney is a wishy-washy politician who will basically say anything to get elected.

3. Money can?t buy an election.

With well over $2 billion spent on the U.S. Presidential election alone, you can?t help but wonder where it all went. Any citizen could learn all they needed for free by spending a few hours researching on the Internet ? each candidate?s positions, as well as a wealth of independent reporting that analyzed those positions and their basis in reality.

If a 30-second blurb on TV can influence your voting decision versus reasoned analysis and careful consideration of both candidates? positions and platforms, then you are probably not someone who should be voting in the first place. And with so many Americans who just vote along party lines, it makes the sheer amount of advertising spending all the more ludicrous.

4. Your vote doesn?t matter (as much as you think for national elections).

Sadly, for all the ?get out the vote? efforts we see in every election cycle, your vote probably doesn?t matter in the Presidential election. Because of the continued use of the arcane Electoral College, most states? outcomes were already decided by the polls and their historical voting patterns. Unless you live in one of the ten states that actually do matter in most national elections ? Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Florida, Virginia, New Hampshire, Iowa, Colorado, North Carolina or Nevada ? you might as well have not voted.

Even when voters do cast their legitimate votes, we see an election can still be decided not by the people, but instead by the Supreme Court. In the 2000 Presidential election, the majority of voters voted for Al Gore. Yet he lost the election because he did not have the Electoral College votes.

And as the Supreme Court noted in its decision, you may think your vote counted ? but it sometimes doesn?t register properly: ?Nationwide statistics reveal that an estimated 2% of ballots cast do not register a vote for President for whatever reason, including deliberately choosing no candidate at all or some voter error, such as voting for two candidates or insufficiently marking a ballot.?

To understand more about why your vote doesn?t count as much as you think it does, I suggest this excellent article from Reason magazine.
